Marriage License

Effective June 23, 2020 and until further notice, the steps for applying for a Marriage License are as follows:

  • Fill out the Application for License and Certificate of Marriage (PDF).
  • Each Applicant must provide a copy of one of the following accepted forms of Identifications:
    • Valid State issued ID or Valid Driver's License
    • Valid Military Photo ID
    • Valid Passport or Visa
  • Prepare a self-addressed stamped envelope for the mailing of your marriage license once it has been processed by the Court. If you wish for the license to be returned to you via express delivery service you must provide a prepaid, fully addressed envelope. Please note, FedEx is the only express delivery service that does daily pickups from our office. If other express delivery services are used, there may be an added delay due to the lack of direct pickup from this office.
  • Mail the following:
    • Completed application (PDF)
    • Marriage License Fee
    • Copies of proof of both applicants' identification
    • A self-addressed stamped envelope (be certain to use the address where you would like the marriage license returned) to:
      Probate Court/Marriage Division
      P.O. Drawer 421270
      Georgetown SC 29442
Any mail-ins being sent by a express delivery service must be sent to the physical address:
      Probate Court/Marriage Division
      401 Cleland Street
      Judicial Center
      Georgetown SC 29440
  • Once all 4 items set forth are received, we will prepare your license and email you a courtesy copy to proofread prior to mailing out your official marriage license. Please be certain to include your email on the application.
  • Please note that there is a statutory 24-hour waiting period in South Carolina from the time you apply until the time the license may be issued.
  • The Probate Court will mail the marriage license via the self-addressed stamped envelope you provide. Please be certain to include the appropriate address and postage.
  • No license will be processed without receipt of all items set forth in the Mailed in Application step.

If you have any questions regarding the above procedures or are under the age of 18, please contact the Probate Court at (843) 545-3274.
