COVID-19 Updates
During the ongoing COVID-19 emergency, we are grateful that there are many people eager to help their community respond and recover. However, Georgetown County is currently unable to accept donations or volunteers related to this ongoing situation. Those looking to volunteer or make donations related to COVID-19 are asked to coordinate through the state. For more information, please visit SCEMD's How to Help page.
You are invited to become a volunteer for Georgetown County government!
People age 14 and up are invited to gain new skills and have a positive impact on their community through volunteerism within Georgetown County government. From coaching youth sports to supporting our firefighters to organizing library bookshelves, there's something to fit a range of schedules and interests. (Those under 18 must have parental permission to volunteer and may not be eligible for some positions.) Please note that Georgetown County government cannot match volunteers with external charity groups; only with departments within county government. However, there are many worthwhile charity groups within the county that are in need of volunteers. If you want to volunteer with a charity, please refer to the Bunnelle Foundation's online directory of local nonprofit groups.
Community Partnerships
Georgetown County government also welcomes opportunities for partnerships with individuals, civic groups and other organizations on endeavors that benefit the community. Such projects can range from public awareness campaigns to educational programs to building projects.
These projects are completed by a volunteer or volunteers with the county's support and provide some type of service to the public. In the past, a number of such endeavors have been completed as Eagle Scout projects.
Why Volunteer
Adults can learn new skills or share acquired ones while helping their neighbors and contributing to Georgetown County government. Students prepare for the work force by gaining valuable experience and skills through volunteer service in a variety of departments.
Become a Volunteer
For more information about becoming a Georgetown County volunteer, email Jackie Broach or call at 843-545-3164. If you aren't sure what kind of volunteer service you'd like to provide, we're happy to help you decide on something that's a perfect fit for you and your individual talents and interests. Many departments may be willing to create a job with a volunteer's unique skills or interests in mind.
What to Expect as a Volunteer
- An Interview: After you apply, you will participate in an interview to assure a successful match between you, the department and the job. However, for some short time or one-time projects the interview process may be waived or modified.
- An Orientation: You may expect an orientation that acquaints you the Georgetown County policies and procedures, expectations you should have for the county, expectations the county has of you, and general information about departments, advisory boards, and volunteer opportunities.
- Training: The department or program with which you volunteer will provide on-the-job training, workplace safety requirements, departmental procedures and supervision to develop necessary job skills.
- Recognition: As a Georgetown County volunteer you may expect recognition and acknowledgement for your contribution. Georgetown County recognizes that volunteers are imperative to the operation of certain programs and functions. In appreciation of those who give their time to make these programs possible and/or offer their assistance in service to the county in other ways, Georgetown County at the end of each year recognizes one Volunteer of the Year and one Employee Volunteer of the Year. The annual Volunteer of the Year and Employee Volunteer of the Year awards are presented during the regular December County Council meeting. The winners will be invited to attend and be recognized by Council and the County Administrator.
- Evaluation and Feedback: You may expect an evaluation of the work that you have accomplished and guidance on the expectations of the position. As a valued volunteer, you are invited to offer ideas and suggestions that help keep the County's programs and services in touch with the needs of the people of Georgetown County.
