Post Storm Repair Reminder

Post Storm Repairs

Please be aware that while we certainly want citizens to be able to clean up and shore up their properties after the storm, a building permit is required before proceeding with repair work.  Repairs to nonconforming structures in a flood zone area must be reviewed carefully so that the cost of construction may be assessed.

According to FEMA requirements, if proposed improvements to a nonconforming structure meet or exceed 50% of that structure’s value then that structure must be improved to comply with the current FEMA requirements.  The Georgetown County Building Department will not be able to sign off on permits for these structures until those calculations are made.

County staff as well as staff from SCDNR completed site visits to affected areas to assess damage and this data is currently being entered in our system.  We appreciate your patience.  If you have questions about your particular structure or proposed construction plans, please contact the Building Department at 843-545-3116 or email bldpermits@gtcounty.org.

In addition, the Georgetown County Assessor’s Office requests to be notified of any structure damages prior to payment of 2022 taxes.  The form can be accessed here:

https://www.gtcounty.org/DocumentCenter/View/1830/Hurricane-Ian---Notification-of-Property-Damage-

The assessor’s office is located at 129 Screven Street.  You may contact them at 843-545-3017 or email sedwards@gtcounty.org or tholt@gtcounty.org.
