Georgetown County is giving registered voters the opportunity to upgrade their old paper voter registration card to an updated plastic version for free during the month of June. Those who wish to take advantage of this opportunity should visit 303 N Hazard Street in Georgetown during normal business hours. No appointment is needed.
“It’s a fairly quick process,” said Aphra McCrea, Director of Voter Registration and Elections. “The new card will then be mailed to the voters in about two weeks.”
The plastic voter registration card replaces the need to show any state issued identification in the event that one’s ID ever lost, misplaced, or expired (which happens a lot). The hard copy contains only the picture of the voter and the voter’s registration number and never expires. If a voter were to move to another county in the state, this card does not have to be upgraded in any way, meaning its use is universal statewide.
