Residents are invited to celebrate “Hollywood Halloween” at the Waccamaw Library on Fridays at 2:30 p.m. this Fall.
Beginning on Friday, Sept. 29, the Library will unveil a series of weekly screenings featuring classic thrillers that create an exciting, eerie mood…perfect for getting into the Halloween spirit! The movies showcase some of classic Hollywood’s brightest stars, including Cary Grant, Priscilla Lane, Peter Lorre, Ingrid Bergman, Claude Rains, Gene Tierney, Rex Harrison, and Tippi Hedren, all of whom deserve to be seen on the Library’s extra-large screen. Daniel Cross Turner, Ph.D., will provide introductions to the films before the screenings and lead audience Q&A sessions afterward. Screenings are sponsored by the Friends of the Waccamaw Library, and are free and open to all. The Library is located at 41 St. Paul Place, Pawleys Island.
The full schedule is as follows:
- Sept. 29: Arsenic and Old Lace (1944): Famed director Frank Capra’s darkly comic adaptation of a wildly popular Broadway play about two cheerful spinster aunts who may or may not also be prolific serial killers.
- Oct. 6: Harriet (2019): A modern classic that recounts the real-life terrors that abolitionist Harriet Tubman confronted as she led African-Americans from enslavement to freedom on the Underground Railroad. (In partnership with the “Bring Harriet Home!: Journey to Freedom” sculpture exhibit, which will be displayed in Georgetown’s Rainey Park through Oct. 31.)
- Oct. 13: Notorious (1946): The undisputed “Master of Suspense,” director Alfred Hitchcock, fashions this film noir masterpiece of personal and political intrigue based on a C.I.A. agent’s attempt to infiltrate a Nazi spy ring in Brazil.
- Oct. 20: The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947): In this romantic fantasy film, the recently widowed Mrs. Muir rents a lovely seaside cottage, where she eventually falls in love with the previous owner, a roguish but good-hearted sea captain. The only trouble is…he’s a ghost!
- Oct. 27: The Birds (1963): Too much Hitchcock is never enough! This exquisite thriller focuses on a sleepy seaside village that is suddenly beset by a series of unexplained and savage attacks by birds.
