For those who love the outdoors or those who want to spend more time outdoors this year, Georgetown County has an event this weekend you won’t want to miss.

An Outdoor Expo at Northwest Regional Recreation Complex on Saturday, March 16, will bring together 20 outdoor-themed groups and organizations to provide information on outdoor opportunities in our area. Guided trail hikes at Rocky Point Community Forest are also planned, weather and trail conditions allowing. The event will take place from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., with presentations from participating organizations scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Outdoor- or nature-based groups and agencies that would like to participate can sign up until March 14.

No pre-registration is required for attendees of this free event.

“We’re really trying to get more people outdoors, exploring our trails and the resources Georgetown County Parks and Recreation has to offer – particularly Rocky Point,” said T.L. Staub, an organizer for the event and Georgetown County Parks and Recreation’s trail coordinator. “We want to get local groups together to tell the public what they have to offer people who want to get outdoors. There will also be outdoor education and conservation activities. It’s going to be a great resource for the public, whether you already love the outdoors or just want to learn more about the kind of activities you can find right here in your back yard.”

“We’re in a really great location and the weather is turning nice,” Staub added. “We’ve got plenty of places for paddling, we’re close to Francis Marion National Forest, you’ve got the beach. Georgetown County is a great base camp for coastal adventure. It’s a perfect place to enjoy the outdoors and not have to deal with the traffic like you have in Charleston and Myrtle Beach.”

This is the first event of its kind to be hosted by Georgetown County Parks and Recreation, but staff hopes to make it an annual event for the spring.

Northwest Regional Recreation Complex is located at 8259 Choppee Road, Georgetown. For more information, call 843-545-3275 or email tlstaub@gtcounty.org.
