Georgetown County Emergency Management is closely monitoring Tropical Storm Idalia as it approaches Florida on a track to cross the S.C. coast Wednesday into Thursday. Residents are encouraged to do the same.
“Take time now to review your family's emergency plan, inventory your disaster supply kit and prepare your property for possible impacts,” said Brandon Ellis, Georgetown County Emergency Services Director. “Be sure to monitor trusted information sources, including the county’s website and social media accounts.” Emergency Management staff will keep the public updated as the situation evolves at gtcounty.org, and @gtcounty and @GCEMD on social media.
As of 5 p.m. Monday, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) shows Tropical Storm Idalia located 35 miles south-southwest of the western tip of Cuba, tracking north at 8 mph with maximum sustained winds of 70 mph. A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for the South Carolina coast south of Georgetown County. Georgetown County is bracing for heavy rainfall, strong winds, coastal flooding and the possibility of isolated tornados later this week.
The Georgetown County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) has not been activated at this time, but staff has been put on standby should the need arise.
